Spring break from NY can get a bit cliché. We are looking at new and different places to visit during our kid’s spring break, and we found a great place to add to your bucket list. We’ve visited Savannah for a day, but we know it’s time to give this historic city another look.
We’ve compiled data from various sources to develop this shortlist of things to do, where to stay, and places to eat in Savannah for you to try. Our 2023 updated post will help you plan the perfect family vacation your kids will love, and the adults won’t mind either.
Free Family Activities for Your Family to Enjoy in Savannah
Savannah is full of rich history, culture, and plenty of activities to fill a vacation. With classic European style architecture and Spanish moss draping over the streets, the city is a beautiful backdrop for your family’s vacation photos. We’ve listed plenty of ideas to help fuel your vacation itch. From free attractions to museums for all your children’s tastes, we’re confident there is something for you.
Forsyth Park
Sometimes you need a little time outside while the kids run around. Savannah has the perfect answer for that. Forsyth Park is located on 30 acres, boasting multiple playgrounds for kids of all ages. While the kids play, relax on one of the park’s many benches while taking in the fresh country air. The park is home to one of the most beautiful fountains modeled after Paris’s Place de la Concorde, which makes a great photo opportunity.
Forsyth Park plays venue to some of Savannah’s many festivals, including the Sidewalk Art Festival in April and Savannah’s Jazz Festival in September. If you need a pick me up, try a fresh juice at Brighter Day Natural foods or a coffee and pastry at Sentient Bean.
Visit Forsyth Park at 2 W Gaston St. Also, Savannah has many parks to visit. Savannah also hosts many beautiful botanical gardens to tour with family.
Savannah Belles Ferry Ride
Sometimes the water is just what you need. Savannah’s Belles Ferry is the perfect trip to get your sea legs. The free ferry transports visitors across the Savannah River, visiting three different ports. Get away from downtown and tour Hutchinson Island or see the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center.
These classic ferries have historical significance. Each of the three ferries resembles the ships providing transport a century ago. Each ship bears the name of each of Savannah’s three “belles” who played significant roles in the city’s history.
You can access the ferries from two points downtown. One at City Hall on the Riverwalk and the other at Morrell Park on the Riverwalk. From Hutchinson Island, you can access next to Westin. The ferry runs completely free from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week, and is ADA accessible.
Find a local event or festival
Savannah is known for more than its extensive history. Between culture and climate, Savannah hosts a variety of events and festivals. With something for everyone, plan a vacation around a festival to heighten your experience.
From late March till early April, the Savannah Music Festival was started in 1989 to help bring music to the city to spur economic and cultural growth. The festival also helps provide music education programs locally.
St. Patrick’s Day March is another springtime tradition your family can enjoy. Traditionally, the parade is held mid-march, like most cities, and free to see. Savannah boasts one of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parades. Over 280 groups parade through historic downtown Savannah in this must see family friendly event.
While the festival happens in September, the Savannah Jazz Festival offers various concerts and events all year long. If you plan to visit in March or April, check out one of the concerts coming up.
Self Tour the art galleries
We will cover River St. and City Market later, but this one needs to be separate. Between the Historic District and Riverwalk, Savannah hosts many art galleries you can explore for free with your family. One of the best ways to teach kids about culture is through art, and Savannah excels at this.
Examples include the Telfair Museum, Jepson Center, the SCAD Museum of Art, The Beach Institute, and Grand Bohemian Art Gallery. Don’t let this list be your only guide. There are many more galleries to visit.
Window shop at City Market & River St.
Savannah’s city market is a fantastic shopping experience and a pretty cool place for the kids to see. Its rich history dates back to the 1700s, and has survived and rebuilt after many disasters. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and entertainment to enjoy with the kids.
Bring your kids to explore the City Market’s courtyard. There is always entertainment, from street musicians to concerts in the evening. Local eateries and galleries provide plenty of culture to share with your kids.
Tybee Island
Outside Savannah on the Atlantic Ocean, the community of Tybee Island is a great family spot.
Being a beach community, Tybee Island has plenty of water activities for your family. From experience, my kids could spend 8 hours playing in the sand. But if you want a little more, Tybee Island has everything from dolphin tours to fishing charters. Also, don’t forget to visit the Tybee Pier for a few amazing Instagram photos.
If the weather isn’t cooperating, Tybee Island has a variety of indoor activities. The island’s lighthouses are perfect for a bit of exercise and a great view of the landscape. The Marine and Science Center provides entertainment and education for $10 a person. Fort Pulaski will bring your family back in time, protecting the Atlantic coast.
